Krulbollen in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Krulbollen is a traditional folk sport in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, in which players roll a flat, asymmetrical disc (krulbol) over a sand track of 11 meters long and 3.5 meters wide, as close as possible to a stake at a distance of 7 meters.
The ball makes an elliptical path due to the rounding on one side, hence the name "krul" (curve).
The game, which is similar to jeu de boules, is played in teams of 1 to 4 people, with techniques such as "bollen" (rolling close to the stake) and "schieten" (playing away opponents).
Especially popular in villages such as Aardenburg, Breskens, IJzendijke, Oostburg, Philippine, Sas van Gent and Waterlandkerkje, krulbollen has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages.
Since 2012 it has been on the national inventory of intangible cultural heritage, but the sport is struggling with an aging population and little influx of young people.
