Craft of Hand-Making Clogs

Hand-making clogs is a traditional Dutch craft in which wooden shoes (klompen) are made from a single piece of wood, usually willow or poplar. 

The process begins with selecting and drying suitable wood, followed by roughly carving the shape with an axe or chisel. 

The clog is then finely worked with hand tools such as a gouge and drawknife to achieve the desired shape and smooth finish. 

This labor-intensive craftsmanship requires precision and experience. 

While machine production is commonplace today, artisans in the Netherlands, such as in villages in Overijssel (near Pella), maintain this cultural heritage, often for demonstrations, tourism, or special orders. The craft is valued for its historical and cultural significance.
