Falconry

Falconry is the traditional art of training and using birds of prey, such as falcons, hawks, and buzzards, to hunt small game like birds and hares.
This practice, which dates back thousands of years, originated in Mesopotamia and became particularly popular in Europe during the Middle Ages among the nobility.
In the Netherlands, falconry is recognized as intangible cultural heritage, with organizations like the Dutch Falconers' Association Adriaan Mollen keeping the tradition alive.
Falconers train the birds to capture and return prey, often using techniques like decoys and gloves.
Today, falconry is also used for nature management, such as chasing birds away from airports, and attracts the public through demonstrations and events.
It requires dedication, knowledge of bird behavior, and a close bond between the falconer and the bird of prey.
