Keti Koti

Keti Koti, which means "Chained Chains" or "Broken Chains" in Surinamese, is an annual celebration on July 1 in the Netherlands and Suriname to commemorate the abolition of slavery in 1863.
On this day, the emancipation of enslaved people in the Dutch colonies became official.
In the Netherlands, Keti Koti is celebrated with festivals, commemorations, parades and cultural events, especially in cities such as Amsterdam (at the National Monument Slavery Past in the Oosterpark).
It is a moment of reflection, commemoration and celebration of freedom, with attention to the history and contemporary impact of the slavery past.
In 2025, it will be a national holiday in the Netherlands.
