The colors are the Pan-Arab colors and carry the following meanings:
Red: revolution, sacrifice, and the blood of martyrs shed for independence.
White: peace, light, and optimism; also refers to the white flag of the 1924 uprising.
Black: Africa and the name Sudan ("Land of the Blacks"); recalls the Mahdi movement.
Green: Islam, agriculture, and prosperity.
From 1956 to 1970, the country used a blue, yellow, and green flag (representing the Nile, the desert, and agriculture).
The current flag replaced it following the 1969 coup d'état.
