It was designed by Mohammed Awale Liban and officially adopted on October 12, 1954, first for the Trust Territory of Somalia and later as the national flag of the independent Somali Republic (1960).
The blue is a tribute to the United Nations, which helped prepare for independence.
Today, it also represents the sky and the surrounding waters (Gulf of Aden, Guardafui Canal, and Somali Sea).
The white star, the “Star of Unity”, symbolizes the five traditional territories where Somalis live: the former Italian Somaliland, the former British Somaliland (Somaliland), Djibouti, the Ogaden region in Ethiopia, and northeastern Kenya.
White stands for peace, hope, and progress.
The flag serves both as the national flag of Somalia and as an ethnic flag for the Somali people.
