It has an area of approximately 4,615 km² and has approximately 469,879 inhabitants (2022).
Known as the "lake province" due to numerous lakes, with the Imbabura volcano (4,609 m) as a landmark.
The region has fertile soils, agriculture (corn, sugar cane, beans), livestock and artisanal markets.
It is divided into six cantons, with a rich history of indigenous Caranqui, Inca and Spanish influences.
