Frisian Woodcarving in De Knipe

Frisian woodcarving in De Knipe is a traditional craft in which wooden utensils, such as trays and boxes, are decorated using the notch carving technique.
Characteristic are geometric patterns such as rosettes and woven figures, often executed in limewood.
In De Knipe, Erno Korpershoek runs Atelier Het Snijpunt, which features a permanent exhibition of antique and modern Frisian woodcarving.
This craft, with roots in the 17th century, is threatened with extinction due to industrialization, but is kept alive by a small group of primarily older hobbyists.
Korpershoek offers tours and workshops, and works on technical innovation.
