It includes Lake Nasser, created by the Aswan Dam, and borders Qena, the Red Sea, Al Wadi al Jadid and Sudan.
With an area of 62,726 km² and approximately 1.69 million inhabitants (2024), it has a poverty rate of over 60%.
Aswan is an important trade and tourist center with UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the Nubian Monuments (Abu Simbel, Philae).
It has a rich Nubian culture, historical sites such as the Unfinished Obelisk and the Nubian Museum, and industries such as copper, steel and granite mining.
