It is an ancient breed originally bred to hunt foxes, badgers, otters, and vermin.
Height at the withers up to 39 cm; weight approximately 9–10 kg.
Typically black-and-tan or grizzle-and-tan, with a wiry, weather-resistant coat (harsh topcoat and dense undercoat).
Resembles a smaller Airedale Terrier, with a rectangular head and a square silhouette.
Temperament: Cheerful, lively, brave, intelligent, and affectionate.
Rarely shy, though independent and sometimes stubborn.
Good with the family given consistent training and sufficient exercise.
Possesses a strong hunting instinct.
Care: Regular stripping/hand-stripping (not clipping/shaving) and plenty of daily exercise.
Life expectancy: approximately 12–15 years.
Generally a healthy breed.
