It was officially adopted in 1996 (often cited as June 18) and is the third flag since independence in 1976.
The design is by Philip Uzice.
The radiating stripes represent a dynamic country moving into the future.
Meaning of the colors:
Blue: sky and sea.
Yellow: the sun, which gives light and life.
Red: the people and their determination to work in unity.
White: social justice and harmony.
Green: land and nature.
The colors also derive from the two major political parties of that time. Prior to this, the Seychelles had a flag featuring a white saltire (1976–1977), followed by a red, white, and green flag with a wavy white band (1977–1996).
