The colors and their meanings:
Green: A standard symbol for the islands' fertile agriculture and lush greenery.
Red: Refers to the people's struggle for freedom and their history of slavery and colonialism.
Yellow (the bands): Represents the year-round sunshine on the islands.
Black: Represents the population's African heritage.
The symbols:
Two white stars: These symbolize hope and freedom, as well as the two islands that make up the federation: Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The flag was designed by Edric Lewis, who won a national competition to create a symbol reflecting the young country's unity and future.
