Flag of the Netherlands

The flag consists of three horizontal stripes in the colors red (top), white (middle), and blue (bottom).
Official status: It is the official national flag of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

History & Origin: The flag originated during the Dutch Revolt in the 16th century.
Initially, the top stripe was orange (the "Prince's Flag" of William of Orange), but for practical reasons—as the orange dye would quickly fade to red when exposed to the sun—it was later changed to red.
In 1937, a Royal Decree officially established the exact shades (bright vermilion red and cobalt blue) as well as the flag's proportions.

Usage: The flag is flown on national holidays (such as King's Day and Liberation Day) and during official state events.
According to flag protocols, an orange pennant may also be attached to the flagpole.
