Flag of São Tomé and Príncipe

The flag of São Tomé and Príncipe consists of three horizontal bands—green, yellow, and green—with a red isosceles triangle on the left and two black five-pointed stars in the yellow band.

It was adopted in 1975 upon independence from Portugal and is based on the flag of the liberation movement MLSTP. 

The colors are Pan-African. 

Green represents the lush vegetation; yellow stands for the sun and cocoa (a major export product); and red symbolizes the struggle for independence and equality. 

The two stars represent the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe.
