Uruz cattle

Uruz cattle (or simply 'Uruz') are a breed of cattle being bred in the Netherlands since 2014 with the aim of breeding an animal that closely resembles the aurochs (the ancient, extinct wild ox). 

The aurochs (*Bos primigenius*) is the ancestor of all our modern domestic cattle. 

This impressive, large wild animal went completely extinct in 1627. 

In late 2013/2014, the True Nature Foundation launched a breeding program to create an animal that strongly resembles the aurochs in terms of appearance, behavior, and ecological role. 

This process utilizes various robust, primitive cattle breeds (such as specific Spanish and Scottish breeds).

The name 'Uruz' comes from Old Germanic/Old Norse (referring to a rune symbol) and literally means 'primeval ox' or 'aurochs'. 

Uruz cattle are deployed in nature reserves (such as the Dutch dunes) to serve as an 'ecological keystone species,' helping to facilitate natural grazing and keep the landscape open.
