Flemish Horse

The Flemish horse is an impressive cold-blooded breed and a traditional draft horse originating from Flanders.
They are large, powerful animals (typically standing between 1.65 and 1.75 meters at the withers and weighing up to 1,000 kilograms) that often feature a chestnut coat.
They are known for their noble appearance, honest temperament, strong work ethic, and excellent stamina.

Historically, these horses were widely used in agriculture and for heavy transport (such as the heavy-duty dray horses in the Port of Antwerp) and formed the foundation for the later Belgian Draft Horse.
While the original type largely died out in Flanders, it survived in North America (where they are known as "Belgians" and bred by groups such as the Amish).
Starting in 1993, animals were brought back to Flanders from North America.
Since 2005, the breed has once again had an officially recognized studbook and is protected as living heritage.
