Top left: A blue star on a white field.
Top right: A solid red field.
Bottom left: A solid blue field.
Bottom right: A red star on a white field.
Colors and stars:
White stands for peace and harmony.
Blue represents the Conservative Party (and traditionally also symbolizes the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea).
Red stands for the Liberal Party.
The blue star stands for civic duty, honesty, and independence; the red star stands for authority and law.
Together, they symbolize the new era of the republic.
The flag was designed by MarĂa Ossa de Amador and hand-sewn on November 3, 1903.
After Panama seceded from Colombia in November 1903, the flag was provisionally adopted and definitively approved in 1904 (and confirmed by law in 1941).
