The oldest parts of the complex date back to the 16th century (around 1550), while the tower is significantly older, originating from the 15th century.
The building is notable for its rich Renaissance-style ornamentation, magnificent stepped gables, and exterior sculptures that symbolize virtue and the administration of justice.
The slender city hall tower features a distinctive design.
In the past, it served as the center of administration and justice for Zierikzee and the Schouwen-Duiveland region.
Today, it is a popular venue for official ceremonies—such as weddings—and forms part of the Zierikzee City Museum, where visitors can explore historic period rooms and a collection of silverware.
Due to its unique historical and architectural significance, the City Hall has been designated a national heritage site (rijksmonument).
