Flag of Montenegro

The flag of Montenegro (adopted on July 13, 2004) consists of a red background bordered by a narrow gold trim, with the national coat of arms in the center:

The coat of arms: A golden, double-headed eagle (a Byzantine symbol representing the unity of church and state).
The eagle holds a scepter and an orb.
The escutcheon: On the eagle’s chest is a blue shield containing a golden lion, a reference to the historical royal dynasty (the House of Petrović-Njegoš) and episcopal authority.
The symbolism:
The red and gold represent royal history, courage, and independence.
The gold border surrounding the flag is quite unique among national flags.

In this way, the flag breaks with the older red-white-blue Yugoslav/Pan-Slavic tricolor and harks back to the banners of historical principalities.
