The colors are derived from the coat of arms of the medieval Dukes of Austria (the Babenbergs).
According to legend, during the Siege of Acre (1191), Duke Leopold V fought so fiercely that his white tunic became completely soaked in blood.
When he removed his belt, a white band remained visible against the blood-stained fabric: red-white-red.
Status: It is one of the oldest national flags still in use in the world; it was officially adopted as the national flag in 1919 (following the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), although the colors themselves date back centuries.
