The flag is divided diagonally into two triangles:
Bottom-left (black): Features the Southern Cross (five white stars), symbolizing the connection with Australia and other countries in the Southern Hemisphere.
Top-right (red): Features the silhouette of a Raggiana bird-of-paradise, a bird native to the country and an important cultural symbol.
Colors: Red, black, and yellow (the stars and the bird appear yellow or white depending on the precise blazon, but the country's traditional colors are red, black, and golden yellow) are the traditional and historical colors of Papua New Guinea.
