Overlying the black triangle is a larger, upright yellow triangle that extends to the center of the flag.
Symbolism of the colors:
Red: Symbolizes the struggle for national liberation.
Black: Represents the obscurantism (oppression) that must be overcome.
Yellow (or gold): Represents the country's wealth and the traces of the colonial past in the nation's history.
White (the star): Signifies the pursuit of peace and the 'guiding light'.
The flag was adopted when the country unilaterally declared independence on November 28, 1975.
Following the long period of Indonesian occupation and the restoration of independence, the flag was officially re-adopted on May 20, 2002.
