(Note: It is located in Ouray County, which is why it is often designated with the abbreviation "CO"—not to be confused with the Swiss canton of Valais, or the Swiss village of Ouchy, whose names might occasionally lead to confusion.)
It is often called the "Switzerland of America" due to its dramatic setting in a deep valley, surrounded by the steep, rugged peaks of the San Juan Mountains (part of the Rocky Mountains).
Ouray is world-renowned for its natural thermal springs.
Visitors can relax in the public Ouray Hot Springs Pool or at various lodges and natural springs throughout the area.
In the winter, the Ouray Ice Park—the world’s first and most famous artificial ice-climbing park—comes to life, attracting thousands of climbers from across the globe.
The town is also known as the "Jeep Capital of the World."
From Ouray, you can easily access famous, breathtaking mountain passes—such as the Million Dollar Highway and Imogene Pass—which are popular among hikers, mountain bikers, and 4x4 enthusiasts.
The historic town center still retains the atmosphere of the 19th-century gold and silver rush, featuring beautifully preserved Victorian architecture.
