The design is based on the Danish flag (red background with a white cross), but with the addition of a blue cross in the center of the white cross.
This symbolizes the historical ties with Denmark and Sweden.
Symbolism of the colors:
Red and white: Refer to the historical flag of Denmark (of which Norway was a part for a long time).
Blue: Refers to Sweden (with which Norway was united in a personal union from 1814 to 1905).
Together, red, white, and blue also form the colors of the flags of freedom, such as those of France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The current flag was designed in 1821 by Frederik Meltzer (member of the Norwegian Parliament) and was officially adopted in 1898 for all voyages and official purposes (after the breaking of the union with Sweden, this became the definitive national flag in 1905).
Special feature: The Scandinavian cross symbolizes Christianity and appears on all Norwegian flags (such as those of Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland).
