Vendée

Vendée is a department in the Pays de la Loire region, on the west coast of France, south of Brittany. 
It borders Charente-Maritime, Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, and Deux-Sèvres. 

Capital: La Roche-sur-Yon. Largest cities: La Roche-sur-Yon (population: 54,700) and Les Sables-d'Olonne (population: 48,700). 
Economy: Dominated by the tertiary sector (services and trade: 62%), followed by industry and construction (32%) and agriculture (6%). 
Low unemployment; strong in retail (3rd in France for hypermarkets) and tourism. 
History: Created in 1790 during the French Revolution. 
Known for the counterrevolutionary uprisings (Chouannerie) in 1793, which were brutally suppressed. Earlier Huguenot persecutions in the 17th century. 
Sights: Puy du Fou (historic amusement park), Île d'Yeu (island), Les Sables-d'Olonne (beach town), Marais Poitevin (marshland), and castles such as Château de Tiffauges.
