With an area of 421,981 km² (21% of Indonesia) and a population of approximately 2.8 million (2005), including many indigenous Papuans with more than 250 regional languages, it is one of the most diverse and remote regions.
The capital is Jayapura.
The region is characterized by vast rainforests, rich mineral resources (such as gold, copper, and gas), and a tropical climate.
Christianity (78%) predominates religiously, with Islam and animism as minorities.
Historically part of the Dutch East Indies until 1963, Papua is struggling with a strong independence movement.
Since 2022, the province has been dissolved and divided into six new provinces, including Southwest Papua, Central Papua, and Highland Papua.
