The city was besieged by Bernhard von Galen, Bishop of Münster, who, with his army of 24,000 men, laid siege on July 21st and used bombs to damage the city.
The defense was led by Carl von Rabenhaupt, supported by refugees from Drenthe and inundations.
On August 28th (Gregorian calendar), Von Galen withdrew after defeats by his allies and the failure to encircle the city, with only half of his troops.
This led to a Dutch victory.
The event has been celebrated annually on August 28th ever since, with festivities, a fair, fireworks, a horse inspection, and trotting races, organized by the Royal Association for Public Entertainment Groningen.
