It was adopted on October 24, 1964, upon independence (slightly modified in 1996, including a slightly lighter shade of green).
Symbolism:
Green: natural resources, vegetation, and agriculture.
Red: struggle for freedom.
Black: the people of Zambia.
Orange: mineral resources, especially copper.
Eagle: freedom and the ability to rise above problems.
The ratio is 2:3.
