It is located about 48 km southeast of Santiago, in the Andes Mountains, and borders Argentina to the east.
It is the heart of the Cajón del Maipo.
The village was founded on July 16, 1792, by Governor Ambrosio O’Higgins as a base for silver mines near San Pedro Nolasco.
The historic center (colonial damer plan, adobe houses, parish church) is protected as a Zona Típica.
Later, the region became important for Santiago's water and energy supply (including Embalse El Yeso, water pipelines, hydroelectric power plants) and as a health resort for lung diseases.
Today, tourism is the main driving force: trekking, rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, thermal baths (Baños Morales, Colina), and nature reserves such as Monumento Natural El Morado.
The municipality is officially a National Tourist Interest Zone.
