White-browed Sparrow-Weaver

The Mahali Weaver (Plocepasser mahali) is a songbird in the family Ploceidae (weavers and relatives).
It is approximately 18 cm long and recognizable by the white eyebrows above the eyes; in flight, the white back is clearly visible.
The call sounds like a loud “hoo-hoo hoo-hoo”.
It is a common species.

The bird breeds in small colonies.
The nest is a messily woven ball of grass and twigs, often in acacias.
It occurs in eastern and southern Africa (four subspecies, from South Sudan/Kenya to South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, etc.).

The population has not been quantified but is described as common to very numerous; the IUCN status is “not threatened”.
