The design consists of a horizontal bicolor stripe (red at the top, blue at the bottom) with a green “Y” shape (or pall) that runs from the hoist side to the center and meets there.
The Y is bordered by narrow white and gold stripes, and there is a black triangle on the hoist side.
The flag symbolizes the unity of the country's diverse population groups after the end of apartheid.
The green Y stands for the confluence of different paths towards one common future.
In short: a modern, multicolored flag that represents the new democratic South Africa.
