Originally bred in 1826 as a strong working horse for agriculture, it became a versatile sport and leisure horse after 1950 through crossbreeding with breeds such as the Hanoverian and Holsteiner.
Westphalians are eager to learn, friendly, reliable, and well-suited for dressage and jumping due to their agility, elegant movements, and strong build.
They have a height of 1.60-1.70 m, are often bay or chestnut, and have an imposing appearance with a brand (W with a crown) on the left buttock.
