The capital is Lima, which is also the national capital.
Despite its relatively small size, the province is Peru's economic and industrial center, accounting for almost a third of the population and 50% of the GDP in 2012.
It comprises 43 districts, administered by the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima, which together form a contiguous urban area, with the exception of a few coastal towns such as Ancón and Punta Hermosa.
Lima was founded in 1821 and became autonomous from the Lima Region in 2002.
It is the political, cultural, and commercial heart of Peru.
