Papermaking in Utrecht

Papermaking in Utrecht is a craft practiced in Leo Hoegen's studio, De Papierderij.
Here, handmade paper is made from pulp of recycled paper, textiles, or plant fibers such as hemp or mulberry.
The process involves soaking the fibers in water, scooping them with a screen, and pressing them onto felt.
Hoegen offers workshops, courses, and presentations to promote the craft, especially among young people, and is working to establish a training program and guild for papermakers.
The craft, with roots in China (2nd century) and Europe (12th century), is kept alive in Utrecht through collaborations with other crafts such as bookbinding and printing.
