Valparaíso

The Valparaíso Region (V Región) is one of Chile's 16 regions.
It is located in the central part of the country, approximately 120 km northwest of Santiago, and has a coastline on the Pacific Ocean.

Key features:
Capital → Valparaíso (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003): colorful hills, historic elevators (ascensores), street art, bohemian atmosphere, and Chile's main congressional seat.
Largest cities → Valparaíso + Viña del Mar (known as the "garden city" and beach destination with the famous Eurovision Song Contest), Quilpué, Villa Alemana, San Antonio (modern port), Quillota. Population → approximately 1.9 million inhabitants (2024) → third most populous after Metropolitana (Santiago) and Biobío.
Economy → Major port activities (Valparaíso + San Antonio), industry, agriculture (fruit, flowers), tourism, viticulture (Casablanca & Aconcagua Valley → excellent white wines), fishing, and mining (copper).

Special extras: Includes remote islands → Isla de Pascua (Rapa Nui / Easter Island) + Juan Fernández Archipelago. Known for: Beautiful beaches (Viña, Concón, Zapallar), street art, Pablo Neruda's houses (Isla Negra, Valparaíso), carnival, and spectacular New Year's fireworks.
In short: a colorful, hilly, maritime region with a unique mix of bohemian culture (Valparaíso), luxurious beaches (Viña del Mar), vineyards, and tropical islands far out at sea.
