Capital: Lanzhou (on the Yellow River).
Location: Borders Xinjiang, Qinghai, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, and Mongolia. Landscape: Very diverse → deserts (Gobi), grasslands, snow-capped mountains (Qilian Mountains), loess plateau, canyons, and oases .
Climate: Predominantly dry, continental (little rainfall, extremely dry, especially in the west).
Historically significant: Gansu forms the famous Hexi Corridor, the "golden" key section of the ancient Silk Road (over 1,600 km through the province).
Here lie iconic highlights such as: Mogao Caves (near Dunhuang) – world-famous Buddhist caves, Jiayuguan – the western terminus of the Great Wall, and Labrang Monastery – one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries outside Tibet.
Population & Culture: Mostly Han Chinese, but also many Hui (Muslims), Tibetans, Dongxiang, and other minorities → a diverse mix of Buddhism, Islam, and Chinese traditions.
In short: Gansu = a fascinating mix of Silk Road history, extreme landscapes, and multicultural heritage — one of China's most diverse and historic provinces!
