It is one of the country's 16 regions (also called "I Región"), with Iquique as its capital.
The region is located in the Atacama Desert, bordering the Arica and Parinacota Region to the north, Bolivia to the east, the Antofagasta Region to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Famous places & attractions:
Port city of Iquique → shopping paradise (tax-free zone), beautiful beaches (Playa Cavancha, Playa Brava), wooden architecture from the saltpeter era.
Pampa del Tamarugal → vast desert plain with old saltpeter factories (such as Humberstone – a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Oasis such as Pica (with citrus groves and thermal baths).
Geysers, geoglyphs, volcanoes, and pre-Columbian ruins in the interior.
In short: a fascinating mix of desert, sea, history (saltpeter tree), and a modern free-trade port.
