Location and setting: The town lies at the confluence of the rivers Rother (from which the name is derived) and Don.
In addition to Rotherham itself, the wider borough includes places such as Maltby, Swinton, Wath-upon-Dearne, and Dinnington, plus much countryside and green space (approximately 70% of the borough is rural, with country parks and open spaces).
Sights and character: Historic centre with Rotherham Minster (Gothic church).
Attractions such as Clifton Park, Wentworth Woodhouse (large country house nearby), Magna Science Adventure Centre and green walking areas.
It is a mix of industrial heritage, countryside, and urban renewal, close to the Peak District.
Notoriety: Unfortunately, Rotherham is also known for the child sexual exploitation scandal (grooming gangs) from the years 1990–2013, in which an estimated 1,400 children were victims – a dark chapter that received much attention in investigations.
In short: a typical industrial Yorkshire town with a rich (but challenging) history, now focusing on regeneration, greenery, and a modern economy, in a strategic location in South Yorkshire.
