Borders: to Poland (Mazowieckie, Podlaskie, Świętokrzyskie, Podkarpackie) and to Belarus and Ukraine in the east.
It lies between the Vistula (Weichsel) and Bug rivers.
Characteristics: The county is a mix of low plains (Polesie, Południowopodlaska), hills (Wyżyna Lubelska), and the Roztocze region.
There are two national parks: Roztoczański and Poleski (swamps and forests).
Approximately a quarter of the area is forested.
It is traditionally an agricultural region with the cultivation of cereals, potatoes, sugar beets, hops, raspberries, and tobacco.
There is also livestock farming (including Arabian horses in Janów Podlaski) and light industry (food processing, machinery, chemicals).
The economy is growing, with a focus on innovation, organic food, and renewable energy thanks to universities in Lublin (strong in science and medicine).
Highlights: Chełm, Biała Podlaska and castles/palaces.
In short: a relatively quiet, green, and historic province with strong agriculture, a strategic location on the EU eastern border, and much cultural heritage.
It is less developed than western provinces, but is growing dynamically.
