Oldham

Oldham Borough (officially: Metropolitan Borough of Oldham) is an urban district in Greater Manchester, Northwest England.
It is named after the largest town, Oldham, and includes, in addition to the city of Oldham, places such as Chadderton, Royton, Shaw, Lees, and the rural Saddleworth area in the Pennines.

Capital/centre: Oldham (the town itself has around 110,000 inhabitants).
The borough is situated on the edge of the Pennines, with a mix of urban area in the west and open, hilly countryside in the east.
Economy: formerly heavily dependent on manufacturing; now more focused on healthcare, education, the public sector, and light industry.
Unemployment is slightly higher than the average in Greater Manchester.
It is a diverse municipality with a relatively young population and a mix of cultures (many residents with roots outside the UK).

In short: Oldham Borough is a typical former industrial area in Greater Manchester that is repositioning itself as a place to live and work, with both urban and green (Pennines) sides.
It has a rich industrial history but is grappling with typical post-industrial challenges such as higher unemployment.
