Ancash

Ancash is a region (department) in western Peru, north of Lima.

Capital: Huaraz (in the mountains).
Largest city: Chimbote (on the coast, important port).
Characteristics: Ancash has a very diverse landscape: a dry coastal strip on the Pacific Ocean, deep valleys, and the impressive Andes Mountains.
The highlight is the Cordillera Blanca (White Cordillera) with snow-capped peaks above 6,000 meters, including the highest mountain in Peru: Huascarán (6,768 m).
The beautiful Callejón de Huaylas valley lies between the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra (Black Cordillera).
Why is it popular? Ancash is a paradise for trekkers, mountaineers, and nature lovers.
Key attractions: Huascarán National Park with turquoise lakes (such as Laguna 69 and Llanganuco), glaciers, and biodiversity (condors, Andean deer).
Famous mountains such as Alpamayo (often called the most beautiful in the world).
Archaeological sites, including Chavín de Huántar (ancient pre-Inca culture).
The region combines mountain adventure with coastal areas and rich history.
It is one of the most beautiful and mountainous parts of Peru.

In short: snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lagoons, hiking, and ancient culture – that is Ancash in a nutshell.
