A distinct variant emerged in Gouda around 1900, called "Gouds plateel," using white, red, or green clay and innovative designs by designers like Theo Colenbrander and painters like Henri Breetvelt.
Production peaked in the early 20th century but declined due to strikes and economic crisis.
The craft was recognized as intangible cultural heritage in 2014.
Trudy Otterspeer, trained at Zenith Pottery, keeps it alive through her studio, Ambachtelijk Plateel, in Gouda's city center, where she offers courses, workshops, and masterclasses.
She is one of the last active pottery painters in the city.
