Marker Embroidery

Marker embroidery refers to the traditional embroidery techniques of Marken (North Holland), a typical element of the Marken traditional costume.
This craft, recognized as intangible cultural heritage, encompasses various styles such as colorful free-form embroidery (the "wild colors"), whitework, cutwork, interlocking, cross-stitch, and kertjes.
It embellishes garments such as corsets, hats, and ribbons (e.g., bell ribbon or Faith-Hope-Love motifs) with wool, cotton, or silk, often with floral and geometric patterns.
The techniques date back to the 17th century and are still practiced today through courses and the Marker Museum.
It promotes community ties and tourism in the village.
