It was separated from Battambang in 2001 and has approximately 70,000 inhabitants, with Pailin City as its capital.
Known for its rich history—from the Khmer Empire to occupation by Burma and Thailand and later as a refuge for Khmer Rouge leaders—and for mining gemstones such as sapphires and rubies.
Despite landmines from the civil war, it attracts tourists with waterfalls, forests, and markets, and offers a tranquil, cross-border atmosphere.
