Canning in Roden

Canning in Roden refers to the traditional Dutch method of preserving food in glass jars (weckpotten), which is preserved and celebrated as intangible cultural heritage in Roden, a village in the province of Drenthe.
The term 'canning' comes from the German inventor Johann Weck, who developed this technique around 1900 using special jars for long-term storage without refrigeration.
In Roden, the Landskeuken on the Mensinge Estate serves as a knowledge center and museum, where demonstrations, workshops, and the annual  'Heel Holland Weckt' market are held to keep the tradition alive.
Since 2013, canning has been on the UNESCO List of Intangible World Heritage, with a focus on honest regional products, traditional methods such as canning and smoking, and raising awareness of sustainable food preparation.
Despite the rise of freezers, it remains popular for self-sufficiency and culinary revival.
