Elst Horse Market

The Elst Horse Market is one of the oldest and largest historic horse markets in the Netherlands, held in the Gelderland village of Elst (municipality of Overbetuwe).
With a history dating back to 1260, it is a living monument and recently recognized as National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Every year, on the first Monday of September (September 1st in 2025), more than 1,000 horses and ponies—including warmbloods, Friesians, and foreign breeds—are traded in the town center, with the market open from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
In addition to its economic role, the event offers equestrian activities, a raffle at 11:00 AM, and traditional delicacies such as "Elster mik," a fruit-filled bread.
The event is organized by the Elst Horse Market Foundation, which also enforces strict animal welfare regulations, such as microchip checks and a 48-hour quarantine for exports.
It attracts thousands of visitors and retains its authentic character after centuries.
