Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is an autonomous region in the far northeast of Italy, one of the five regions with a special status.

Capital: Trieste (on the Adriatic Sea).
Borders: Austria (north), Slovenia (east), the Adriatic Sea (south), and the Veneto region (west).
Landscape: From high mountains (Dolomites, Carnic Alps, and Julian Alps) in the north to a flat coastal plain with lagoons (including Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro) in the south.
The region has both ski resorts and beautiful beaches.
Culture & language: Highly multicultural due to its location: influences from Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Slavic areas. Italian, Friulian, Slovenian, and to a lesser extent German are spoken.
The region has its own identity and history (including Roman Aquileia, Venetian and Habsburg periods, and a complex border history with Yugoslavia after WWII).
Known for: Excellent white wines (Collio, Friuli Colli Orientali).
Culinary specialties (prosciutto di San Daniele, Montasio cheese, seafood dishes).
Beautiful cities: Trieste (cosmopolitan, coffee houses), Udine, Gorizia. Sights: Miramare Castle, Roman remains in Aquileia, Grotta Gigante.

In short: a small but very diverse region with mountains, sea, top wines, a rich (border) history, and much less mass tourism than the rest of Italy. Ideal for those seeking authenticity!
