It lies on the Java Sea (north), the Sunda Strait (west, opposite Sumatra), and the Indian Ocean (south).
The province borders West Java and Jakarta to the east.
Capital: Serang.
Largest city: Tangerang (and South Tangerang) – these are located in the Jakarta metropolitan area.
Banten became an independent province in 2000 (formerly part of West Java).
The northern part (Tangerang, Cilegon, Serang) is heavily industrialized and is part of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area.
The southern part (Pandeglang and Lebak) is greener, with hills, mountains, forests, and beaches.
Famous attractions include: Historic Banten Lama (old sultanate with the large mosque).
Ujung Kulon National Park (UNESCO, last home of the Javanese rhinoceros).
Beaches such as Anyer and Carita.
The population consists mainly of Bantenese and Sundanese people, almost all Muslim.
The province has a rich history as an important trading center in the 16th–17th centuries (especially the pepper trade) during the Sultanate of Banten.
In short: a mix of industry around Jakarta, historical sites, and beautiful nature in the south.
