Aude

Aude is a department in the south of France, in the Occitanie region (between Toulouse and Montpellier).
It takes its name from the Aude River and is often called "Pays Cathare" (Cathar Country) because of its rich medieval history surrounding the Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade.

Capital (préfecture): Carcassonne (famous for its medieval fortified city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
Largest city: Narbonne.
Other sub-préfecture: Limoux.
Landscape: Very varied → Mediterranean coast (beaches, ponds), Canal du Midi, Corbières hills, Montagne Noire, foothills of the Pyrenees.
You can be at the seaside in the morning and in the mountains in the afternoon.
Known for: Cathar fortresses (Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Montségur, etc.).
Wine regions (Corbières, Minervois, Fitou, Malepère, Blanquette de Limoux).
Gastronomy: cassoulet, oysters (Narbonne), truffles, olives.
Roman and medieval heritage (Narbonne was once the Roman capital of the region).

In short: sun, sea, mountains, excellent wines, top history, and a relaxed southern French atmosphere – one of the most beautiful and least crowded departments of Occitanie.
