It is also the administrative center of the regional unit (formerly prefecture/province) of Larisa.
Location: In the heart of the fertile Thessalian plain (one of the largest and most productive agricultural areas in Greece), on the River Pineios.
Importance: Fifth-largest city in Greece, important agricultural, commercial, industrial, university, and transportation center.
History: One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe (over 8,000 years of habitation), with Neolithic remains, an ancient theater, an acropolis, and numerous archaeological finds within the city itself.
Surroundings: Close to Olympus (Greece's highest mountain), the Tempi Valley, Pilio, Meteora, and the coast.
Today, Larissa combines modern city life (cozy squares, cafes, parks, cultural festivals) with a rich history and agricultural tradition.
It's a lively, yet less touristy city compared to Athens or Thessaloniki.
